Sikhote-alin Meteorite, 1947 Russia. Coordinates 46°09′36″N 134°39′12″E

In 1947 Russian onlookers watched as one of the largest Meteorite entries survived its burning passage through earths atmosphere and landed in the Sikhote-alin mountains. It has been estimated that over 23 tonnes of meteorite impacted the mountains on this date in Southeastern Russia.

At around 10.30am residents of Sikhote-alin mountains of Primorye witnessed the meteorites entry which was brighter than the sun and accompanied by a deafening sound which could be heard for up to 190 miles surrounding the impact. As the large meteorite entered earths atmosphere it began to break apart into fragments and the largest piece exploded on entry. Some of the fragments hit the earth at such a force they buried themselves up to 20feet deep.

The meteorite is formed of approximately 93% Iron, 5.9% Nickel, 0.42% Cobalt, 0.46% Phosphorous and 0.28% Sulphur.
